Graham Wong The Spotlight is on Graham Wong.

Mr. Wong wrote our SAP HR content.

RN: Please tell us a little about yourself.

WONG: I am the President of DataCarver Systems, Inc., (www.datacarver.com) a technology consulting company currently focusing on SAP HR functional and technical implementations as well as technical development projects including those based on the Cold Fusion and Microsoft ASP web frameworks. I've been working with SAP since 1994 starting with release 2.2 and have been consulting on SAP HR solutions for over 6 years. Prior to co-founding DataCarver Systems, Inc. I worked as a BASIS/technical administrator for GE FANUC Automation, a $500M division of General Electric, as well as with various consulting groups including SAP America, Realogic, and Soft Guide International. I hold a Masters in MIS and Bachelors degrees in French and Commerce from the University of Virginia.

RN: What interested you in writing ReviewNet tests?

WONG: After years of consulting on different projects I have often thought of writing a reference book about SAP HR. Unfortunately due to time commitments with work it has been difficult for me to focus my thoughts on putting together a full fledged publication. Developing and writing a ReviewNet question set allowed me to test the waters of writing to an audience. Besides being an excellent way to test my own knowledge it also afforded me a small glimpse of the mindset required to write with a target audience in mind. I also found the whole concept of streamlining the interview process through the ReviewNet service an intriguing concept in assisting recruiters of all sorts in their jobs. Given today's global technology market the task of finding truly qualified resources has become a very complex problem and the ReviewNet tests provide recruiters a helpful tool to supplement their own recruiting methods.

RN: What did you enjoy most about writing your SAP HR test?

WONG: The process of writing a ReviewNet test turned out to be an excellent way for me to review and test my knowledge about the general framework of the SAP HR module. It provided an interesting challenge in that it required me to focus on the larger picture of the SAP HR module. During my consulting engagements the 'big picture' is often set aside in an effort to focus on the details of a critical consulting problem or task. Writing the ReviewNet test forced me to once again attempt to evaluate and view the larger picture.

RN: How do you keep up with changing technologies and the latest trends in the IT industry?

WONG: One of the things that I love about the technology profession is its rapid pace of change and innovation. This also is obviously one of the most frustrating aspects of the profession as well. In order to stay current with SAP-related trends I read as much as I can about SAP technology developments in addition to general science and business news. I also try to continuously broaden my technical understanding through code development in ABAP, Visual Basic, ASP, or whatever language-du-jour I am able to get my hands on.

RN: What advice would you give to someone learning your discipline? Are there significant barriers to learning about this subject?

WONG: A few years ago, all you had to do was be able to spell SAP in order to get hired away from a company to be a high paid consultant. The subsequent shakedown of the industry and the markets have continued to prove that experience and hard work are what companies want from their people. My only advice to someone wanting to learn SAP and/or SAP HR is to focus on learning as much as you can about the subject matter and anything else that interests you. The SAP solution is an excellent way to learn about other functional areas because of its integrated cross-functional nature. As I have a technical background, I also firmly believe that the stronger you are technically the better and faster you will be in learning and understanding exactly how and why SAP works the way it does. After all, the code that makes SAP or any other piece of software work rarely lies.
