BILL: I'm a Division Engineer for BBN Technologies in Arlington Virginia. I do research and development for customers like the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) using a wide variety of technologies. I have written articles on Java and embedded systems for Java Developers' Journal, Embedded Systems Programming, and Dr. Dobbs Journal.
BILL: My undergraduate education is actually in music education. When I first decided to make the transition to information technology, I thought it would be a huge mental shift, but I think a lot of the mental skills are transferable. In fact, many of the best technical people I work with are amateur musicians and many of my musician friends are into computers.
BILL: I do a lot of interviewing for my company, so I know how difficult it is to assess candidates for technical positions. Many of the candidates I interview have only superficial experience with the technologies on their resumes. To help identify the skilled candidates, I developed a small set of questions that I could use to probe a candidate's background. Expanding these informal questions into a complete set of ReviewNet questions was good experience for me and I hope they will be of use to others.
BILL: I think server-side Java technologies are really revolutionizing the way large-scale software systems are built. These two technologies enable software engineers to build rich web applications without depending on closed, proprietary technologies.
BILL: I tried to cover all of the aspects of the discipline at some level. There are some questions that are easy for anyone with a little experience with the discipline and other questions that will be difficult for even the most experienced technologists. It should give hiring managers a good measure of how fluent the candidate is with the discipline.
